Last week I had the tasty pleasure of trialing a mix of Fruit and Vegie juices from Schkinny Maninny. Juiced fresh everyday and delivered to your door in a cute, miniature esky; what more could this mama of two ask for? I decided to switch the cold drip coffee for some cold pressed juice. As I am still breastfeeding, I couldn’t complete any of the Schkinny Maninny cleanses, so I used the juices to supplement my breastfeeding diet.
Might I also mention the hot pink juice lids & labels which oh so perfectly matched my saltwater sandals? Cue Instagram photo perfection!
If I’m being completely honest, I’ve really struggled to make good food choices since Isla arrived nearly a year ago. A combination of those early weeks when my babe was in the NICU; travelling back and forwards to the hospital and skipping meals because I was stressed. During that time, breakfast hardly ever happened; unless you counted the double shot flat white en route to the hospital every day.
There was no improvement when Isla arrived home with the combination of sleep deprivation, feeding all through the night, constant 23-hour a day reflux screams … oh, and caring for a 20-month-old toddler. I became a mummified zombie, living off double shots after double shots of coffee.
Having these Schkinny Maninny juices staring at me in the fridge was like having my own Personal Nutritionist encouraging me to nourish my body, and reminding me of my passion for healthy eating. When I read things like ‘improve your energy and vitality’ and ‘rich in potassium to help control blood pressure’, on the side of my juice, I instantly felt like I was making positive changes to supplement my breastfeeding diet. Sometimes you’ve just got to accept a helping hand and for me this helping hand was fresh, cold pressed and delivered-to-my-door juice. The juices reminded me that eating nourishing foods is critical, not only for my own health, but for setting up healthy food relationships for my two children.
I loved having healthy fresh juice in the fridge; it meant I could just grab it, and go and get an energy boost throughout the day. They inspired me to make creative salads again, following my forgotten rule of eating a rainbow every day.
In all, I consumed a one-day Fruit and Veg Juice pack; however I spread the four juices over two days; supplementing my breastfeeding diet with wholesome and nutritious foods. I felt lighter, clearer, fresher and ready to take on the world after adding fresh juice to my day.
When I have finished breastfeeding Isla in a few months; I am going to reward myself with one of the five-day Schkinny Maninny juice cleanses. After being either pregnant or breastfeeding for the past three and a bit years, I think a juice cleanse will be the perfect way to say thank you to my body.
Schkinny Maninny is an Australian Company run by an amazing girl boss Catherine Craig. Here at The Merge Journal we love being inspired by mama bosses and we had the pleasure of asking Catherine a few questions.
Who is the mama behind Schkinny Maninny? Can you share a little something about yourself?
I am a self confessed health nut, surfing obsessed new mum trying to balance running a business, eating well and getting outside as much as possible!
What was the inspiration for starting Schkinny Maninny?
I did juice cleanses myself at home and loved the benefits, feeling cleaner and lighter, snapping me out of bad eating habits and glowing skin, but it was such a huge amount of work for me to do at home, so I thought there had to be other people who would love to do a cleanse but didn’t want to make the effort.
You’re a mama and a fabulous girl boss of Schkinny Maninny. How do you find the balance between running a company and being a mama?
I have learnt not to procrastinate! Efficiency is your friend, so when I put Coben down for a sleep, I know I only have a limited amount of productive time to get through my to do list. I have to get stuck into it with a single-minded focus (no Facebook allowed!).
One piece of advice for other mamas wanting to start their own business?
Just start, that is the hardest part, as soon as you get started it gets easier and easier.
Favourite juice combination?
Definitely our Greens and Beets juice – beetroot, carrot, spinach and lemon.
Can you bust one myth about doing a juice cleanse?
That you are hungry all the time! Having a 500ml juice full of nutrients every 2 hours in the day is more than enough to keep you satisfied, but not overly full.
Most bizarre juice you’ve ever tried?
Hmm, probably the strangest tasting was a juice with bentonite clay and charcoal with turmeric and ginger!
